SEO tracking: report progress with data, not opinions
SEO should not rely on gut feeling. This page explains which numbers matter and how to tell real progress from noise.
Four core KPIs
| KPI | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Impressions | How many pages appear in results; reflects indexing and relevance |
| Clicks | Actual search traffic |
| CTR | Whether titles and descriptions attract clicks |
| Rankings | Position changes for non-brand keywords |
How the tools fit together
Search Console shows impressions, clicks, indexing and technical issues. GA4 shows on-site behaviour and conversions. Rank trackers follow selected keywords. The three should be read together.
Reporting cadence
- Monthly: impressions, clicks, CTR trends, index changes, technical errors
- Quarterly: keyword distribution, content performance, next priorities
- After each release: compare 30 days before and after
Common traps
Brand keyword illusion: brand terms rank first anyway. Watch non-brand terms.
Last-click bias: SEO often assists conversions, so review assisted conversions in GA4.
Average position: averages are dragged down by long-tail queries; look at distribution.
