E-commerce SEO: making thousands of products findable
The biggest enemies of an online shop are duplicate and thin pages. Fix the structure and indexing and rankings follow.
Category pages do the heavy lifting
Category pages usually compete for the most valuable terms. They need unique introductory copy, a clear product list, filters and links to subcategories, not just a grid of products.
Product pages need unique content
| Element | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Title | Brand, model and key attribute; avoid one template for all |
| Description | At least 150 words of unique copy covering material, size and use |
| Schema | Product and Offer with price and stock in sync |
| Images | Descriptive alt text and meaningful file names |
| Internal links | Link to related products and categories |
Facets and pagination
Filter parameters create many URLs. Index only the main combinations, use canonical or robots for the rest, and give each paginated page a self-referencing canonical.
Out of stock and discontinued
Do not delete ranking product pages. Show out-of-stock status where restocking is expected, and 301 discontinued items to the closest alternative.
